The pineal gland (otherwise known as the Third Eye, conarium or Epiphysis Cerebri) is a small endocrine gland located at the geometric center of the brain.
Amongst other things our pineal gland is responsible for the production of melatonin (a serotonin derived hormone), the regulation of our sleep patterns, circadian rythms and our sexual deveopment. It’s also known to increase our intuition and thought to be responsible for DMT production (a naturally occurring hallucinogenic found in all living organisms, including human beings).
The pineal gland, who’s name derives from the Latin word pinea, meaning ‘pinecone’ in reference to it’s pine-cone shaped body, was coined by Seventeenth-Century French philosopher, Rene Descartes, as the “seat to the soul” believing that it was the gateway to a spiritual world. This belief is shared today by millions of people world-wide and even shared by many ancient civilizations including the Romans, Egyptians, Babylonians and Greeks. Many (if not all mainstream religions) up to this day have references to the pineal gland in their texts and teachings.
Also known as the Third-Eye, the pineal gland shares many of the same anatomical components to our actual eyes, including rods and cones; interestingly, in lizards you’ll find that their third eye even has a cornea.
The pineal gland (also known as the pineal body, epiphysis-cerebri, pineal organ or conarium) is a small endocrine gland found in vertebrates that converts serotonin and synthesizes it into melatonin (more about melatonin here), a hormone derived from tryptophan, which regulates the roughly 24-hour cycle of biological activities associated with periods of light and dark, otherwise known as the circadian rhythm.
The pineal gland develops during the 2nd month of gestation. It is one of the smallest glands of the endocrine system and is responsible for our sleep/wake system as well as our sexual development cycles.
The shape of the pineal gland closely resembles that of the pine-cone from which it derived its name. The size of the pineal gland in adult humans is normally between 5mm-8mm (~0.2-0.3 inches) long, about the size of a grain of rice, and weighs approximately 0.1 grams. Melatonin is made in the pineal gland in the brain.
Melatonin has got a very powerful anti-oxidant status. Melatonin is 5x as powerful as vitamin C and twice as powerful as vitamin E. it secrets only at night. It is needed at night because that’s when we go to sleep and that’s when the brain is being repaired by the body.
Each day our body looses about half a billion cells. At night, our body replaces these cells through a process called cell mitosis (the dividing of cells).
